Where is the Clinic Located?

+

We are located at 2756 Danforth Avenue in East York, Toronto. We are easily accessible by TTC (between Coxwell and Greenwood stations on Line 2), GO Train (Danforth Station is a short walk away), by car, and by bike. Visit our Getting Here page for detailed directions and parking information.

What Are Your Clinic Hours?

+

We are open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm, and Saturday from 9am to 3pm. We are closed on Sundays. Please note that appointments between 8am and 9am on weekdays must be pre-booked in advance. You can book online anytime through our booking portal or call us at 416-690-7077.

Do I Need a Referral to Visit the Clinic?

+

No referral is needed for any of our services. You can book directly online through our booking portal or by calling us at 416-690-7077. Some insurance plans may require a doctor's referral for reimbursement, so it is worth checking your specific plan details.

Can I See Multiple Practitioners at the Clinic?

+

Absolutely, and this is one of our greatest strengths. As a multi-disciplinary clinic, our practitioners work together to coordinate your care. If you are seeing a chiropractor, physiotherapist, massage therapist, or naturopath under the same roof, they can collaborate to make sure your treatments complement each other rather than overlap.

Not Sure Which Service is Right for Me?

+

That is completely normal. Many of our practitioners offer a free 15-minute meet-and-greet where you can ask questions and receive guidance before committing to a full appointment. You can also call our front desk team at 416-690-7077 and they will help point you in the right direction.

Is There Parking Available?

+

During the Danforth construction phase, we have partnered with William J. McCordic School to offer our patients free parking in their school lot, accessible off Coleman Avenue - about a 4-minute walk from the clinic. The lot is available weekdays after 3:30pm and all day on weekends. You will need to register your vehicle with the front desk before using the lot. Visit our Getting Here page for full details.

Appointments and Coverage

How Do I Book an Appointment?

+

You can book online anytime through our Jane App booking portal, or call us at 416-690-7077. Online booking is available 24/7 and lets you choose your preferred practitioner, service, and time slot.

Are Your Services Covered by Insurance?

+

Most of our services are covered by extended health benefit plans in Canada, including Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Acupuncture, Counselling, Dietetics, and Custom Orthotics. Coverage amounts vary by plan, so we recommend checking your specific benefits before your first visit. We offer direct billing to most major insurance carriers. We recommend confirming your coverage with your insurance provider prior to your appointment.

Please note that it is the responsibility of each patient to ensure they have adequate insurance coverage for the services they receive. While we will do our best to direct bill on your behalf, full payment for all rendered services is due upon completion of your appointment.

Is Physiotherapy Covered by OHIP?

+

Physiotherapy is not covered by OHIP for most adults in Ontario, but it is covered by the majority of extended health benefit plans. If you were injured in a motor vehicle accident or have a workplace injury claim through WSIB, additional coverage options may apply. We recommend confirming your coverage with your insurance provider to understand your options.

Do You Offer Direct Billing?

+

Yes, we offer direct billing to most major insurance carriers. This means we can submit claims to your insurer on your behalf so you only pay the difference (if any) at the time of your visit. We recommend confirming with your insurance provider whether your plan is eligible for direct billing. Please keep in mind that it remains the patient's responsibility to verify their coverage and to complete payment for all rendered services at the time of the appointment.

Do You Treat Patients Involved in Motor Vehicle Accidents?

+

Yes, we accept motor vehicle accident (MVA) patients. If you have been injured in a car accident, our team can provide Chiropractic care, Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, and other services to support your recovery. MVA claims are typically covered through your auto insurance. Contact us and our team will help guide you through the process and any documentation you may need.

What Forms of Payment Do You Accept?

+

We accept all major forms of payment including credit card, debit, and cash. Payment for all rendered services is due upon completion of your appointment.

Cancellations and Missed Appointments

What is Your Cancellation Policy?

+

We ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. When you book with us, your practitioner sets aside dedicated time just for you, which means a late cancellation or missed appointment is time that could have been offered to another patient.

We understand that life is unpredictable, so we use a fair three-step approach:

1
First missed appointment - no charge. We get it, things come up. Just give us a call when you are ready to rebook.
2
Second missed appointment - 50% of the appointment fee is charged. Because that time was reserved for you and held away from other patients who may have needed it, a partial fee helps us maintain availability for everyone.
3
Third missed appointment - the full appointment fee is charged. At this stage, we ask that future appointments be confirmed in advance so we can continue to provide the best possible care for all of our patients.

How Do I Cancel or Reschedule My Appointment?

+

You can cancel or reschedule through your Jane App account, or by calling us at 416-690-7077. Please provide at least 24 hours notice to avoid any cancellation fees.

What if I Am Running Late?

+

If you are running late, please call us as soon as possible. Your practitioner will do their best to accommodate you, but please be aware that your appointment may need to be shortened to stay on schedule for other patients. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, we may need to reschedule your appointment.

Chiropractic Care

What Does a Chiropractor Actually Do?

+

A chiropractor is a primary healthcare professional that focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, joints, and surrounding muscles and nerves. At The Healing Theory, our chiropractors use manual adjustments, soft tissue therapy, exercise prescription, and other techniques to relieve pain, improve mobility, and support your body's natural ability to heal.

What Conditions Do Your Chiropractors Treat?

+

Our chiropractors treat a wide range of conditions including low back pain, neck pain, headaches and migraines, sciatica, disc herniation, shoulder and knee pain, TMJ, carpal tunnel syndrome, postural dysfunction, and sports injuries. If you are not sure whether Chiropractic is right for your specific condition, book a free 15-minute meet and greet and we will point you in the right direction.

What Should I Expect on My First Chiropractic Visit?

+

Your first visit includes a thorough health history review, a physical assessment of your posture, range of motion, and strength, and a discussion about your goals and concerns. Depending on your presentation, your chiropractor may also recommend x-rays. You will leave with a clear understanding of what is going on and a recommended treatment plan.

Will I Hear a "crack" During an Adjustment?

+

Not necessarily, and that sound is not what indicates success. The audible pop you sometimes hear is just gas being released from the joint. It is harmless and painless for most people. Many effective adjustment techniques do not produce any sound at all. Your chiropractor will always discuss techniques and treatment options before proceeding, and will always choose a gentler approach if you prefer it.

I Have Never Been to a Chiropractor and I Am Nervous. Is That Okay?

+

Absolutely. Many of our patients have never seen a chiropractor before and are unsure what to expect. Both Dr. Laura and Dr. Nigel take time to explain every step of the assessment and treatment before doing anything, so you will always know what is happening and why. You can also book a free 15-minute meet-and-greet before committing to a full appointment.

How Many Visits Will I Need?

+

This depends entirely on your condition, how long you have had it, your overall health, and your goals. Some patients feel significant improvement in 1-3 visits. Chronic or complex conditions may require a longer course of care. Your chiropractor will give you a realistic treatment plan after your first visit, including expected timelines.

Physiotherapy

What is Physiotherapy and What Does It Treat?

+

Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession focused on restoring movement, reducing pain, and improving physical function after injury, illness, or surgery. Our physiotherapists treat a wide range of conditions including back and neck pain, sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, joint pain, sciatica, headaches, workplace injuries, and motor vehicle accident recovery.

What Happens at a First Physiotherapy Appointment?

+

Your first visit begins with a detailed assessment - your physiotherapist will review your health history, ask about your symptoms, and conduct a physical examination of your movement, strength, and the affected area. From there, you will discuss a personalized treatment plan with clear goals and a realistic timeline. Depending on your condition, hands-on treatment may begin in the first visit.

What Techniques Do Your Physiotherapists Use?

+

Our physiotherapists draw from a range of evidence-based techniques including manual therapy, joint mobilization, therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation programming, soft tissue release, ultrasound therapy, wax dipping, and education on posture and movement habits. Treatment is always individualized to your specific needs.

Can I Do Physiotherapy if I Am Currently in a Lot of Pain?

+

Yes. Physiotherapy is appropriate even in the acute phase of an injury or flare-up. Your physiotherapist will always work within your current tolerance and adapt techniques to what your body can handle. In many cases, appropriate early intervention speeds recovery and reduces the risk of an acute problem becoming chronic.

Massage Therapy

What is the Difference Between a Relaxation Massage and a Therapeutic Massage?

+

A relaxation massage focuses on general stress relief through flowing, rhythmic techniques. A therapeutic massage is more clinically focused - your RMT will assess specific areas of dysfunction and apply targeted techniques like deeper pressure, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, or joint mobilization. Our RMTs are trained to provide both, and your treatment will always be tailored to what you need on the day.

What Should I Expect at My First Massage Therapy Appointment?

+

Your RMT will begin with a brief health history intake to understand your current concerns and goals. They will tailor the treatment to your specific needs, discussing pressure preferences, areas to focus on, and anything to avoid. You will be appropriately draped throughout the treatment, and your comfort and boundaries are always the priority. After the session, your RMT may offer recommendations for home care or follow-up frequency.

How Often Should I Get a Massage?

+

This depends on your goals. For acute injury or rehabilitation, more frequent sessions (weekly or biweekly) are often recommended initially. For general maintenance and stress management, monthly sessions are a common and effective rhythm. Your RMT will give you a recommendation based on your specific situation.

Can I Get a Massage if I Am Pregnant?

+

Yes. Prenatal massage is safe and beneficial throughout pregnancy when performed by a trained therapist. It can help with back pain, hip discomfort, swelling, fatigue, and the general physical demands of pregnancy. Let us know at the time of booking so we can ensure your appointment is set up appropriately.

Naturopathic Medicine

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

+

Naturopathic Medicine is a regulated health profession that takes a whole-person approach to health, looking at the root causes of illness rather than just managing symptoms. Our naturopathic doctors combine evidence-informed natural therapies with conventional diagnostic tools to create personalized treatment plans that may include nutrition and lifestyle counselling, herbal medicine, supplements, hormonal support, and lab testing.

How is a Naturopathic Doctor Different From My Family Doctor?

+

Naturopathic doctors and medical doctors have distinct but complementary roles. Your family doctor is essential for diagnosis, emergency care, and prescription medication. A naturopathic doctor spends significantly more time with you (initial appointments are typically 60 to 90 minutes) and focuses on contributing factors like nutrition, gut health, stress, sleep, and hormonal patterns. Naturopathic care works best alongside your existing medical care, not instead of it.

What Does a First Naturopathic Appointment Look Like?

+

Your initial appointment is typically 60 to 90 minutes. Your naturopathic doctor will take a comprehensive health history covering your current concerns, past medical history, diet and lifestyle, sleep, stress, and any medications or supplements you are currently taking. They may recommend lab testing or begin a treatment protocol in the first visit. You will leave with a clear picture of your health priorities and a plan to address them.

Can Naturopathic Medicine Work Alongside My Existing Medications?

+

Yes, and our naturopathic doctors are trained to consider potential interactions between natural therapies and pharmaceutical medications. Always let your naturopathic doctor know everything you are currently taking. The goal is always a complementary approach that supports your overall care.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

What is Acupuncture and How Does It Work?

+

Acupuncture is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves the insertion of thin needles at specific points on the body to stimulate healing and restore balance. When properly stimulated, acupuncture activates your body's natural healing response, improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and promotes overall wellness.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

+

Most people find acupuncture to be a relaxing experience. While you may feel a slight sensation when the needle is inserted, acupuncture needles are extremely thin and most people report little to no pain. Many patients actually fall asleep during treatment. Your practitioner will communicate with you throughout to ensure your comfort.

What Conditions Can Acupuncture Treat?

+

Acupuncture is effective for a wide range of conditions including chronic and acute pain, back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, sciatica, arthritis, digestive disorders, stress, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, and emotional imbalances. Many people also use acupuncture for fertility support and post-surgical recovery.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

+

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive system of healthcare that has been practiced for thousands of years. It views the body as an interconnected whole and focuses on restoring balance and harmony to promote healing. TCM encompasses a range of therapies including acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion, and dietary therapy. At The Healing Theory, our Advanced TCM Practitioner uses these techniques to address the root causes of health concerns rather than just treating symptoms.

Is Acupuncture Safe for Children, Pregnant Patients, or Older Adults?

+

Yes. Acupuncture is a safe and gentle therapy that can be adapted for patients of all ages and stages of life. For children, techniques are modified to be quick and comfortable, often using fewer and thinner needles. During pregnancy, acupuncture is commonly used to support nausea relief, back pain, stress, and preparation for labour, with specific point selections that are safe for expectant mothers. For older adults, acupuncture can help manage chronic pain, improve circulation, support mobility, and promote overall well-being. Your practitioner will always tailor the treatment to your individual needs and health history.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

How Do I Know if I Need Therapy?

+

There is no single answer to this question. Many people find therapy helpful when they are experiencing emotional distress, struggling with relationships, dealing with a major life transition, or simply want to understand themselves better. Common reasons include anxiety, depression, grief, past trauma, relationship difficulties, or feeling stuck. Our free 15-minute initial screening is a great way to explore this with a professional.

Is Everything I Share Kept Confidential?

+

Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of therapeutic practice. Everything you share with your therapist is strictly confidential. There are only a few legal exceptions, such as if there is immediate risk of serious harm to yourself or others, or in cases of child abuse. Your therapist will discuss these exceptions with you in your first session.

Do You Offer Couples or Family Therapy?

+

Yes, we offer both couples and family therapy. These sessions are designed to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships. Our therapists create a safe, neutral space for all parties to be heard and understood. Couples and family sessions are 75 minutes in length.

What is the Difference Between a Social Worker and a Psychotherapist?

+

Both Registered Social Workers (RSWs) and Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) are qualified to provide talk therapy and counselling. The main difference lies in their training and scope. Social workers are trained through a broader lens that includes understanding social systems, community resources, and advocacy alongside therapeutic skills. Psychotherapists complete specialized training focused specifically on psychotherapy techniques and the therapeutic relationship. In practice, both professionals can help with issues like anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and relationship challenges. At The Healing Theory, we have both an RSW and an RP on our team, and our front desk can help match you with the right fit based on your needs and preferences.

Custom Orthotics

How Do I Know if I Need Orthotics?

+

You may benefit from custom orthotics if you experience foot, ankle, knee, hip, or lower back pain; have flat feet or high arches; overpronate or supinate when walking; have postural imbalances; or deal with repetitive strain from walking or standing. A biomechanical assessment with one of our chiropractors will help determine if orthotics are right for you.

What is the Difference Between Custom Orthotics and Store-bought Insoles?

+

Store-bought insoles are generic and designed for average feet. Custom orthotics are specifically fabricated based on your unique biomechanics, gait pattern, and lifestyle. They provide targeted support to correct your specific alignment issues at the source, rather than just adding cushioning.

How Long Do Custom Orthotics Last?

+

Custom orthotics typically last 1-3 years depending on how frequently you wear them, your body weight, activity level, and the types of shoes you wear them in. Your chiropractor will monitor their condition during follow-up appointments and let you know when replacements are needed.

Dietitian Services

What is the Difference Between a Dietitian and a Nutritionist?

+

Registered Dietitians are health professionals regulated by provincial licensing bodies who have completed extensive education, training, and certification. Nutritionists may not have the same regulated credentials. At The Healing Theory, our dietitian holds professional registration and is bound by a strict code of ethics, ensuring you receive evidence-based nutrition guidance backed by current research.

Can You Help With Food Allergies or Intolerances?

+

Yes. Our dietitian can help you manage food allergies, intolerances, and sensitivities by identifying trigger foods, ensuring nutritional adequacy despite restrictions, and teaching you how to read labels and navigate social eating situations safely.

What Does a Treatment Plan With a Dietitian Look Like?

+

Your first visit is a comprehensive assessment where your dietitian reviews your health history, current eating habits, lifestyle, and goals. From there, a personalized nutrition plan is created that fits your needs and preferences. Follow-up visits are used to track progress, troubleshoot challenges, adjust recommendations, and build on your success. The number of follow-ups depends on your goals, but most patients find that regular check-ins over a few months help build lasting habits and meaningful results.

Paediatric Care

At What Age Can My Child See a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist?

+

Our practitioners are experienced in working with children from infants to teenagers. The specific age at which certain treatments are appropriate depends on the individual child and their needs. We recommend scheduling a consultation to discuss your child's specific situation.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Children?

+

Yes, Chiropractic care is safe for children when delivered by a qualified practitioner with experience in paediatric care. Our chiropractors use gentle, age-appropriate techniques tailored to children's developing bodies. Children are not just small adults, and their treatment protocols reflect this important difference.

Can You Help With Sports Injuries in Teenagers?

+

Yes, our team is experienced in treating adolescent sports injuries including sprains, strains, growth plate injuries, and overuse injuries. We also provide return-to-play guidance and injury prevention strategies to help teenagers stay active safely.

Do You Offer Mental Health Services for Kids and Teenagers?

+

Yes. Our Registered Social Worker and Registered Psychotherapist both work with children and teenagers on a range of concerns including anxiety, depression, behavioural challenges, social difficulties, family transitions, grief, and self-esteem. Sessions are tailored to be age-appropriate and create a safe, comfortable space for younger patients to express themselves. Parents are welcome to be involved in the process as needed. You can book a free 15-minute screening to discuss whether counselling is a good fit for your child.

Is Massage Therapy Appropriate for Children and Teenagers?

+

Yes. Massage therapy can be very beneficial for children and teenagers, particularly those dealing with sports injuries, growing pains, postural concerns from screen time, stress, or muscle tension. Our Registered Massage Therapists use gentle, age-appropriate techniques and will always ensure your child feels comfortable throughout the session. A parent or guardian is welcome to remain in the room during treatment. Shorter session lengths are available to suit younger patients.

Prenatal and Postnatal Care

When Should I Start Prenatal Care at Your Clinic?

+

It is never too early to start prenatal care. Many mothers benefit from beginning Chiropractic care, Physiotherapy, or naturopathic support as soon as they know they are pregnant. The earlier you begin, the more time we have to prepare your body for pregnancy, labour, and postpartum recovery. Some mothers even start before conception to optimize their health.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?

+

Yes, Chiropractic care is safe during pregnancy when provided by practitioners trained in prenatal care. Our chiropractor, Dr. Laura Mercuriano, has specialized training in pregnancy and postpartum care and uses gentle techniques and pregnancy-specific positioning during treatment.

Do You Offer Postpartum Mental Health Support?

+

Yes. Our Registered Social Worker, Ellice Strikwerda, and our Registered Psychotherapist, Chandika Makanjee, both provide counselling support for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, postpartum depression, and the emotional transition to motherhood. Mental health support is an essential part of comprehensive postpartum care.

Exercise Rehabilitation

How is Exercise Rehab Different From Going to the Gym?

+

While gyms offer general fitness training, Exercise Rehabilitation is specifically designed for your injury or condition. Our practitioners assess your unique situation, provide hands-on guidance, monitor your form and progression, and adjust your program based on how you are healing. This personalized, therapeutic approach ensures safe and effective recovery.

What Should I Wear to My Appointment?

+

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely, such as athletic wear or workout clothes. Avoid restrictive clothing and bring supportive shoes. If you have any concerns about what to wear for your specific condition, our team can advise when you book.

How Long Does a Typical Rehab Program Last?

+

The length of your rehabilitation program depends on your condition, how long you have had it, your overall health, and your goals. Some acute injuries may require 4-8 weeks of rehab, while chronic conditions or post-surgical recovery may take 3-6 months or longer. Your practitioner will give you a realistic timeline after your first assessment.
