Pelvic Floor Care for Men

Pelvic floor dysfunction isn't exclusive to women. Men can experience pelvic floor issues too, and our physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat them.

Common concerns we treat in men include post-prostatectomy incontinence, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic floor tension, bowel dysfunction, and pain in the perineum, tailbone, or hips. Whether your concerns follow surgery, injury, or have developed over time, you'll receive the same thorough, evidence-based care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about pelvic floor physiotherapy at The Healing Theory.

What Does a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Assessment Involve?

+

Your initial assessment includes a detailed health history, a discussion of your symptoms and goals, and a physical examination. This may include an external assessment of your posture, breathing, and core, as well as an internal pelvic floor examination (vaginal or rectal) to assess muscle tone, strength, coordination, and any areas of pain or tension. Everything is done at your pace and with your full consent.

Is an Internal Examination Required?

+

No. An internal exam is the gold standard for assessing pelvic floor function, but it is never required. Your physiotherapist will explain what the exam involves, why it's recommended, and what alternatives are available. You are always in control of your care, and treatment can absolutely begin without an internal assessment if that's your preference.

When Should I Start Pelvic Floor Physio After Giving Birth?

+

You can begin as early as your first few weeks postpartum for gentle breathing, posture, and early core reconnection work. A more comprehensive pelvic floor assessment is typically done around 6 to 8 weeks after delivery, but there is no wrong time to start. Whether you're 6 weeks or 6 years postpartum, treatment can help.

Can Pelvic Floor Physio Help if I Haven't Had Children?

+

Absolutely. Pregnancy and childbirth are common contributors to pelvic floor dysfunction, but they are far from the only ones. Chronic pelvic pain, bladder and bowel issues, pain with intercourse, endometriosis, high-impact sport, surgery, and hormonal changes like menopause can all affect the pelvic floor. You do not need to have been pregnant to benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy.

Do You Treat Men for Pelvic Floor Concerns?

+

Yes. Men can experience pelvic floor dysfunction too, and our physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat it. Common concerns include post-prostatectomy incontinence, chronic pelvic pain, perineal or tailbone pain, and bowel dysfunction. Treatment follows the same evidence-based, patient-centred approach we use for all of our patients.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

+

It depends on the nature and severity of your concern, how long you've been experiencing symptoms, and your goals. Some patients see meaningful improvement in 3 to 5 sessions. Others with more complex or longstanding issues may benefit from a longer course of care. Your physiotherapist will give you an honest idea of what to expect after your initial assessment.

Is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Covered by Insurance?

+

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is billed as physiotherapy, so it falls under your extended health plan's physiotherapy coverage. Most employer-based insurance plans in Ontario include physiotherapy benefits. We offer direct billing to most major insurance providers. If you're unsure about your coverage, check with your plan or contact us and we can help point you in the right direction.

What is Your Cancellation Policy?

+

We require at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Late cancellations and missed appointments are subject to the full treatment fee. We understand that life happens, so if an emergency comes up, just reach out and we'll do our best to work with you.
